Description
These savory cheese straws are made with a simple dough enriched with grated cheese and a touch of seasoning. Baked until golden and crispy, they deliver a satisfying crunch with each bite. Perfect for entertaining, they can be served warm or at room temperature, making them a convenient option for any occasion. Enjoy them on their own or with a dipping sauce for added flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp cold water (if needed)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cayenne pepper. Add the softened butter and mix until crumbly. Stir in the cheddar and Parmesan cheeses.
- Combine wet ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg and Dijon mustard. Add the egg mixture to the flour and cheese mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, until it comes together.
- Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to cut the dough into strips (about 1 inch wide and 4-6 inches long).
- Shape the straws: Twist each strip gently and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve: Enjoy the cheese straws warm or at room temperature as a delightful snack or appetizer.
